What Is A Cold Rolling Mill?

Cold rolling mills are process equipment used for cold rolling seamless metal tubes. They feature high material utilization and superior product precision and surface roughness compared to cold-drawn tubes. They are mainly divided into two series: the LG type two-roll and the LD type multi-roll, suitable for the production of precision tubes from carbon steel, alloy steel, and non-ferrous metals. Since the China Heavy Machinery Research Institute developed the first LD30 three-roll mill in 1960, China has gradually developed a variety of specifications covering billet outer diameters of 9-127mm and finished product outer diameters of 8-120mm. These products are used in industries such as metallurgy, automotive, and petroleum machinery.

The equipment consists of a main motor, mill stand, and rotary feeding mechanism. Since 2006, new high-speed models have adopted servo motor drive, equipped with a double-sector block balancing system and closed-stand technology, achieving stepless adjustment of feed rate and fully automated operation, with production efficiency 2.5-3 times that of ordinary models. Some models are equipped with side roll changing technology to improve operating efficiency. A typical product, such as the LG-730 cold rolling mill, can produce large-diameter seamless tubes with an outer diameter deviation of ±0.6mm and a wall thickness deviation of ±0.5mm. Its surface quality and dimensional accuracy are significantly better than those of products produced by traditional cold drawing processes.
